It’s a bit of a sad Oppo story, but the ‘90 Citroën BX diesel is gone. Sold. Not shipped to an Oppo member in the US as intended (I bought the car he picked) but still sold to someone loving old cars. I even made €200 in the process. One down, a few more to go.

The new owner intends to commute about 100 km each day in it, and that’s exactly what these are made for. It’s only got 323k on the odometer, so it’s barely broken in. He told me he currently owns a modern car, and modern cars just aren’t his thing. He needs to feel a connection with a car, and his face imidiately showed he had that click with the Citroën. I can’t say I disagree, I feel bad for letting the car go. Compared to my Ford Focus (2013/diesel/manual/wagon) company car a car like that BX is just more car and less appliance.

The buyer contacted me, indicating he wanted to test drive the car. No mention of the price, nothing. He told me he got a 1-way 2+ hour trainticket to get to the city I live in. My bargaining position was great as a result. Not that I needed it, as he paid what I asked for and did so with love.

The picture below shows the last seconds I saw the BX. The new owner is standing next to it, calling his insurer. The deal was already done at that time, money was payed and my afternoon break was over so I took off to go back to work.

A big trunk. Gigantic with the seats folded down. This is all relative to the size of the car, obviously.

Tow hook with plastic cap. A measly 70 or so diesel horsepower, but it’s still allowed to tow 1100 kg.

Here’s the rest of the herd, most of which will go as well. I think I’ll offer the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! at a fancy auction soon. I’m keeping the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! for a while, as a backup for my rally and/or until someone from the US shows genuine interest. The !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! is having some work done as we speak, and will end up on a fancy auction very soon or next spring. The !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! will stay. It’s my DD. Not pictured: ‘13 Ford Focus wagon company car, as it’s an appliance, not a car.

Bummer on letting go of a sweet French commuter but that 205 GTI is exactly the kind of ride my friends and I thought about buying for a Euro trip before shipping in back to the states. Good luck on selling them!

Not a thing often seen on diesel BXs, or indeed on any kind of BX.

ZF four speed with torque split in third gear and a locking torque converter in fourth. Popular on a whole range of European cars once.

Congrats on the sale, it sounds like the car went to a good home. Have you thought about offering the BMW or the 205 on Bring A Trailer? They do auctions now and it seems to be becoming a popular means of selling older collectible/interesting cars. They might be especially interested in your experience shipping cars to the states.

I actually had a car on BAT once , a car already registed in Texas. In hindsight the pictures weren’t optimal, but still. That car was absolutely pristine, yet it didn’t result in a price we hoped for. We ended up selling it for a bit more money, at break even (my current E30T is cheaper). BAT was oversaturated with E30 Tourings at the time. Anyway, I’m not too enthusiastic.

Are you still planning on having such a trip?

Not for another 5 years, sadly.

I hope you’ll be able to get a nice 205 GTI then. Prices are rising quickly already, and will continue to rise I imagine.

It’s what it left the factory with.

How much would you sell the E30 for? I live in the US and would use it as a first car.

Quite the coupé contrast.

The Hyundai is owned by my brother in law. A doctor who makes more money in a week than what that car is worth. It’s been his daily driver since 2009 or so. In his mind it looks good, and is comparable with my coupe when it comes to looks. Stockholm syndrome, I guess.

I have a friend who is similarly afflicted. I truly do not understand what he sees in the thing...

In fairness, he’d probably say the same about me and my 106.

It was in the link . $4500, excluding shipping. Shipping to a Eastern US port will probably be about $1500 or so. If you want to you can fly over to Europe, drive it around for a week or two and then take it with you, back to the US.

They’re kinky, but I like them. Nice stable, BTW.

My parents have a petrol BX19 with the 4HP14 – it’s dead slow, but the transmission always struck me as being pretty clever for an ‘80s car.

Not a bad price, but too much for me at the moment. Sorry
